A major decision is in your hands

"Letter to Editor"

01/17/2007

Dear Editor,

America will elect a new President next year. While the election is more than 20 months away, the race has begun.

Individually, Democracy for America members will choose their favorite candidates. But, collectively, DFA has an opportunity to influence the presidential primary process and the candidates' positions. Imagine a nominee who shares your values with the power of Democracy for America on his or her side.

It's up to DFA members to decide if we should jump into the presidential primaries as an organization. You steer DFA. Will you help make this decision?

You have shown over and over the power of Democracy for America -- from electing Howard Dean chair of the Democratic National Committee to enthusiastically endorsing dozens of candidates who helped take back Congress to hosting hundreds of Iraq War protests across the country last week.

When we work together, we invigorate the political process. We shape the course of events. And we elect candidates who share our values.

But we don't launch new campaigns without consensus. That's why your opinion is so important.

DFA could play a major role in the presidential primaries. In 2003, DFA members contributed millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours. This year we could help bring the candidates and the grassroots closer together. We could even decide to endorse a candidate and put the power of the DFA network you've built on his or her side.

Together, we could also decide that our grassroots movement is best served by staying local. We've shown our strength in every state. We've trained thousands of activists in the strategies and tactics of running a winning campaign. And hundreds of DFA members have run for local office. If we choose not to get involved in the presidential primaries, it's not going to slow us down.

This is a decision best made by you.

I hope you'll take a few moments to think it over. And then help write the next chapter in Democracy for America.

Thank you,

Jim Dean
