Dealing with Git’Mo

The Guantanamo Bay prison is depicted as a necessity for dealing with terrorists and it is said that we run it because we must.

There is of course an alternative and that is to let the UN run it. Specifically the UN Human Rights Commission should run it.

It should be renamed the UN International Terrorism Prison and it could house people who are international terrorists. They would reside there both before and after trial.

With the UN Human Rights Commission in charge of it that would be the end of accusations against the U.S. that we are running a shop of horrors in Cuba. We could turn it over to the UN lock, stock, and barrel, and also pay a fee towards annual upkeep and operations costs. Like Pontius Pilate we could just wash our hands of it.

Git’Mo would then act as a modern form of Devils Island for the twenty first century, a lockup for international criminals and those nabbed in terrorist strikes.

Bush is getting no good results from his ownership of Git’Mo. America is getting a black eye, it needs to be addressed politically because we are becoming the poster-boys for torture and abuse and Guantanamo Bay is the icon for anti-Americanism.

Fix it, close it, or else turn it over to an international body to operate.
