Dear MoveOn member,
For more than three years, Congress has given President Bush a rubber stamp on his Iraq plans. Even now, as a civil war explodes, the Republican leaders in Congress won’t allow a debate on whether we should change course.
The idea that Congressional leaders would refuse to even discuss the most important issue in the country is amazing. But there’s hope yet. Rep. Walter Jones—the Republican who once supported the war and coined the term “Freedom Fries"—has brought together a bipartisan group of members of Congress to demand an open debate and vote on all alternatives to the Bush war in Iraq.
If this bipartisan gang of rebels gathers 218 signatures on a “discharge petition” from other representatives the regular business in the House of Representatives must stop and a 17 hour debate on the Iraq war must immediately begin.
Rep. Gutknecht has not yet signed the petition calling for an open debate and vote on the war in Iraq.
Will you call Rep. Gutknecht and urge him to sign H. Res. 543—the discharge petition for a debate and vote on the Iraq war?

Tell the staffer who answers something like the following. This script communicates the basic facts but make sure you speak from your heart.
“I am a constituent and I would like the Congressman[woman] to sign H.Res. 543—the discharge petition calling for an open debate about the war in Iraq. Congress shouldn’t give the president a rubberstamp. They must do their job.”

The debate will require that Congress consider and vote on all amendments offered as alternatives to the Bush administration’s policies in Iraq. But even representatives who oppose a timetable for an exit from Iraq can get behind this measure.
Currently, 95 Members of Congress have signed the petition. With you help, we can reach 218 and force Congressional leaders to allow an open and honest debate and vote on the Iraq war.
Call or visit your Member of Congress TODAY and ask him or her to pledge to sign H. Res 543 upon returning to the U.S. Capitol on April 25.
Thanks for all you do.
