Jesse Lang at Down by the Riverside
Jul 10, 2005 7:00PM
Mayo Park, 30 Civic Center Dr. SE, Rochester, Minn.
Cost: Free but donations are collected
Charter Communications and KROC FM present Rock night featuring Minnesota
based up-and-comer JESSE LANG (http://www.jesselang.net/) with opening
act Spindrift on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at 7 PM in Mayo Park. Kid Jonny
Lang filled the park in ‘96 and went on to international acclaim. Will
sister Jesse do the same? Her manager/father (who also engineered Jonny’s
ascent) and current manager Adam Somers (long-time Dreamworks Records and
Warner Brothers exec.) think she is poised for success. With a 2004 win
at the Minnesota Music Awards for Best New Artist and a debut album on
the horizon, Jesse’s star is rising quickly. While she does not mind the
occasional comparison to brother Jonny, one listen to her music and
you’ll hear there is no comparison. Jesse’s sound is a culmination of
diverse musical genres including rock, funk and r&b. Influences include
Janis Joplin, Prince and Motown.

Post Bulletin Dialogs on Iraq
Monday July 11 7:00PM
Rochester Public Library
Free and open to the public
Post-Bulletin photographer Nate Howard got a close-up view of the Iraq
war last spring when we sent him there to cover area military personnel
serving with Company B of the National Guard’s 434th Main Support
Battalion.
Nate came back with excellent photos and news coverage from his week on
the ground near Tikrit, with stopovers in Kuwait. Hopefully, you saw it
in the paper and also looked at the Web log he produced while he was on
assignment. If you missed it, you can view his coverage online at
http://www.postbulletin.com.
Last month, he presented a program on his experiences in Iraq at the
Paramount Theatre in Austin, and about 150 area residents attended. So
we’re going to repeat that program in Rochester on Monday. Nate will show
photos of Company B’s deployment ceremony in Austin a year ago, along
with pics from Iraq and Kuwait.
The program is part of our Post-Bulletin Dialogues series at the
Rochester Public Library. We’ll begin at 7 p.m. and, as always, coffee
and good conversation will be offered.

Rochester Concert Band & Choir (Down by the Riverside)
Jul 17, 2005 7:00PM
Mayo Park, 30 Civic Center Dr. SE, Rochester, Minn.
Free but donations are collected
In its 136th year of existence, the Concert Band has become a Rochester
institution. Originally named the Rochester Park Band, the band’s annual
concert in the park still conjures up memories of a time gone by;
strolling down to the old bandshell in Mayo Park on a hot summer evening
to enjoy the tunes of the day as performed by friends and neighbors. From
Broadway hits to patriotic classics, with a dash of classical thrown in
for good measure, Chuck and company offer up a little something for
everyone; with a few surprises. Nothing says “summer” like a band concert
in the park. This year’s concert happens to fall on conductor Chuck
Blattner’s birthday. So come on down and help him blow out those candles.

Josh Turner (Down by the Riverside)
Jul 24, 2005
Mayo Park, 30 Civic Center Dr. SE, Rochester, Minn.
Free but donations are collected
A native of Hannah, South Carolina, deep-voiced Josh Turner burst on the
country scene in 2003 with the powerful “Long Black Train,” a song Turner
had written after listening to a Hank Williams Sr. box set. Sounding like
a gospel-blues out of the 1940s, “Long Black Train” wrestles with the
grand themes of temptation, salvation, death, and redemption, and the
song quickly brought Turner national media attention and a top 20 single.
His first album, Long Black Train, produced by Frank Rogers, was released
by MCA in 2003. In 2004 Josh was nominated for two Country Music
Association awards including Song of the Year and the Horizon Award for
best new artist. http://www.riversideconcerts.com
