January Community Events

I have attached a list of community events for January. There are a
lot of diversity events this month. I recommend the Martin Luther King
events, the Diversity Council annual meeting, Coffee and Conversations,
and Rochester on Tour at the Capitol. The
Greg Mortenson events also sound very interesting.

You may also want to start reading the Rochester Reads 2007
selection, "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History
Textbook Got Wrong" so you are ready for the Rochester Reads events in
February.

If you have any events you would like added to this list, please send
them to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Description: In the book "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to

journey that led Mortenson from a failed attempt to climb Pakistan's
K2, the world's second hightest mountain, to successfully building
schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and
Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading,
Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge
of the third-world to fight terrorism with books, not bombs, and

Bicycle Friendly Community Workshop
Mayo Civic Center
Riverview Suite
Monday, January 29, 2007
11:45 am-4 pm

In 2006 the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) awarded the City of
Rochester Honorable Mention designation as a Bicycle Friendly
Community, recognizing past efforts to develop safe and effective
bicycling facilities. As part of its Bicycle Friendly Community
Outreach Program, LAB has selected Rochester as the site of one of six
Bicycle Friendly Community Workshops it will conduct in 2007. The
workshop will be led by Andy Clarke, LAB executive director and
nationally recognized bicycle advocate. The workshop will bring
together community leaders and interested citizens to explore how to
improve bicycle safety and effectiveness as a mode of travel.
This four hour workshop is designed to be a catalyst that will lead to
long term improvement in conditions for bicycling in the Rochester and
Olmsted County. The workshop will explore issues affecting bicycle
safety and use, assess conditions for bicycling in our community, and
provide an opportunity to discuss what can be done to encourage
bicycling in the city. By the end of the workshop facilitators and
participants will draft an action plan for improving conditions for
bicycling in the community.
Don’t miss this opportunity to help plan our future! Space is limited
to 40 participants; to help organizers plan the event we ask that you
please RSVP your attendance to Stephanie Foster, Rochester-Olmsted
Planning Department, (507) 285-8232. Lunch will be provided.
