Minnesota’s Stake in the Supreme Court Nomination Hearings
As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I participated in last week’s confirmation hearings for Solicitor General Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court. I’m not a lawyer, so I think of myself as a proxy for my constituents. I used my time in the hearing to express my concern with how Supreme Court decisions affect the lives of Minnesotans. I was very impressed by General Kagan’s responses in the hearing and by her remarkable career.
Fighting For Homeowner’s Rights
Recently, I joined Republican Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) to author the Homeowner Advocate amendment which would create the Office of the Homeowner Advocate to help homeowners who believe their mortgage servicer is breaking the rules. This amendment would assist more than 20,000 Minnesotans in danger of losing their homes. I was able to meet with some of them to explain how my amendment would help.
Speaking at This Year’s Netroots Nation Conference
On the evening of Saturday, July 24, I will have the honor of giving the closing keynote speech at the fifth annual Netroots Nation conference in Las Vegas. Netroots Nation is an annual gathering of a growing number of progressive citizens, organizations, and politicians who use new media technologies to communicate with their constituents. If you can’t join us in Las Vegas I invite you to watch my speech live online.
My New Website
I’m excited to announce that I just launched a brand new website at franken.senate.gov and I encourage you to check it out. The new website is going to make it easier for Minnesotans to get in touch with me, find out which one of my offices is closest to them, get help with a federal agency, learn about my legislation and activity here in the Senate, or how to come join me at one of my weekly breakfasts. I’d love your feedback so let me know what you think.
