Red Lake Nation’s four districts broke from the State and County trend of voting for Gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton, and instead voted for Margaret Anderson Kelliher in the August 10th state primary election. Kelliher outpolled Dayton and the third candidate Matt Entenza in three districts. Little Rock, Redby and Red Lake, voted in favor of Kelliher while Ponemah favored Entenza over both Dayton and Kelliher. Although winning Ponemah, Entenza polled third in the other three districts.

The Red Lake Indian Reservation highly favored DFL candidates in the primary casting 445 votes for DFL candidates, while only eight votes were cast five Independence party candidates, and eight for four Republicans. Interestingly, of the eight votes cast for Republican candidates, half were cast for political gadfly and perennial DFL candidate Ole Savior. Savior after failing to win DFL endorsement decided to run as a Republican and did better than ever.

Over the entire reservation, Kelliher received 174 votes, to 148 for Dayton, and 112 for Entenza. A fourth DFL candidate received 11 votes. This amounted to a 95.90 % vote for democrats with a .02% vote for Republican and .02% for Independence party candidates.
