Trap set for war with Iran
"Letter to Editor"07/01/2008
This morning, I submitted the following letter to the Post-Bulletin. I
do not believe most DFLers support all the sabre-rattling we've heard
against Iran, and certainly do not support an act of war directed
against Iran. I think it's important for DFLers to know what their
junior Senator is up to.
Please call Sen. Klobuchar and demand that she withdraw her support from
a measure that will harm both Iranians and Americans. The only people
who can possibly benefit from S. Res. 580 and H. Con. Res. 362 are arms
merchants and Republicans. Call Rep. Walz as well, as he seems to be
wavering a bit on this.

To the Editor:
The American people know that an unprovoked attack on Iran would be
an unnecessary disaster. Indeed, IAEA inspections confirm Iran is
producing only low enriched uranium for power generation, useless for
bombs. To make highly enriched uranium, Iran would have to reconfigure
its centrifuge cascade or have a clandestine cascade unkown to the IAEA
(and the US). Reconfiguration would be impossible to hide from
inspections, but you can't bomb a clandestine facility if you don't know
where it is. Thus, bombing can only prevent peaceful use of nuclear
technology. Bombing can not prevent or even slow the accumulation of
HEU if Iran were actually making it.
Senators Klobuchar and Coleman are co-sponsoring S. Res. 580, which
"demands" that President Bush lead the international community in
cutting off refined petroleum imports to Iran. Implementation requires
a naval blockade, an act of war. Iran will resist this act of war, and
her resistance will be spun as initiating hostilities. Most likely this
will happen before the election. Americans will be fooled once more
into supporting US aggression.
Call Sen. Coleman (202-224-5641). Tell him S. Res. 580 will result
in untold death, destruction and economic hardship. Call Sen. Klobuchar
(202-224-3244). Tell her S. Res. 580 is a trap set for Democrats. When
sprung, it will result in a sweeping Republican victory in November.
Ask them to withdraw their support.
Sincerely,
Bill Rood
