NEW SESSION: The Senate opens its 2006 legislative session next week with two measures that are unlikely to move forward.

PATRIOT ACT: The Patriot Act is set to expire Feb. 3, but Republican leaders lack the votes to permanently renew many of the anti-terror law’s provisions.

ASBESTOS SUFFERERS: The other bill, which would establish a trust fund for asbestos disease sufferers and ban related lawsuits, faces strong opposition from unions and companies.
