8 conference committees get down to work

Eight committees of 10 legislators each convened Monday afternoon in hearing rooms around the State Capitol complex for a traditional rite of spring lawmaking -- with a few new twists.

For the first time in Capitol memory, joint House-Senate conference panels for every major spending bill were scheduled to meet at the same time, a move that DFL legislative leaders said will speed development of the two-year state budget by the May 21 adjournment deadline.
