A Lesson LearnedPaul Munnis
I worked at the DFL Booth at the Women’s Expo on Saturday for awhile and it was quite interesting. We had women approach us to sign-on to help the DFL in our election efforts for 2008. We had others that made it clear that they are long-time Republicans who will join us because the GOP is clearly on the wrong side of issues like: The War in Iraq, Childhood Health Care, and Public Education.
One lady approached me and she wanted to talk to see if Democrats were really ogres or not. One was surprised when told that we don’t know the answer to some of issues like “Immigration Reform” and that a lot more work is needed before our Party will take a stance. We do not want to split the nation or the Party over this issue. I was surprised by that conversation for it took place right near the GOP booth and I was chosen because I was wearing a DFL logo badge. I assured her that we do know that the Democratic National Convention is the real deadline for announcing our Party position on Immigration Reform and that it will happen in all likelihood by that time.
Still others were anxious to know where candidates stood on issues of importance to them.
America is in a position where each citizen is making up their minds on where they stand. They know that actions and deeds must follow commitment and so they are making very difficult changes and it hurts them socially and even hurts within their family circles. Yet they are moving to where their conscience takes them and I respect them for that.
The Expo experience was a humbling experience for this Democrat. I came away convinced that we should not avoid the tough issues for others cannot avoid the issues from a moral standpoint and they are taking a stand no matter how painful it is. This is called: “Courage.”
