A Nuclear Paradox at Home

10/21/2007

Paul Munnis

G.W. threatens us with WWIII if Iran gets a nuclear bomb and Dick Chaney avows that he will not let Iran get a nuke. He will bomb Iran first. We now need to ask if Bush and Chaney should have the A-bomb? Are they a threat to world peace? Should the American people revoke their custody of the nuclear codes? Should the UN disarm America as a threat to world peace?

A case could be made for these actions. When the U.S. laws were passed they assumed rational heads in the White House not a couple of loose cannons.

I don’t know if we even could pass such a law. The Congress is grid-locked but even if there was agreement, Bush would likely veto it and the gridlock kooks would likely up-hold the veto. Too bad the 9/11 Commission didn’t take this one on.

This subject will have to be addressed someday – maybe sooner rather than later.

Also, we need to re-look at our control over nukes. The recent Air Force incident resulting in 60-70 weapons handlers being fired for illegal loading and transport of nukes does not inspire confidence that we have our control right. That is a lot of people screwing up. That is a lot of poorly supervised people screwing up. We might even ask if a mercenary military can be entrusted with nuclear weapons or could a loose-cannon turn a nuke on the American people? What if that B52 had been directed to Iran rather than to a domestic airbase if some zealot in the Pentagon decided to save us all?

The comfortable assumptions of the past need to be challenged and tighter controls established to fit these changing times.

I am not comfortable anymore with Bush / Chaney having nuclear authority and I want the Congress to relieve them of their ability to commit nukes. I also want them locked away from the Air Force and secured until better controls are established and assured.

The inmates are running the asylum.
