BBC Special, “The Power of Nightmares”
12/01/2006
Here's a 3 part special from the BBC on how the neo-conservatives and radical terrorists complement each other and feed off one another. It's three hours. First hour describes the Straussian underpinnings of neo-conservatism, how neo-conservatives first exaggerated the Soviet threat with Team B, and how George Casey, after reading The Terror Network, was convinced the Soviets were behind international terrorism. He called in his analysts and they told him, "No, sir. The stories in that book are fabrications. We know it, because our operations people planted them to begin with." But Casey wouldn't be convinced and continued to believe (or claimed to) the neo-conservative fantasy. The second hour explains how the most radical Islamists had discredited themselves amongst the Muslim masses by the late 90s, and never really had an organized network. The third hour explains how the US government invented al Qaeda in order to presecute bin Laden in absentia after 9-11 and how almost all prosecutions of "sleeper cells" have been shams and frame-ups.
The only real criticism I have of the whole series is the lack of mention of US and other Western provocations including support for Israel, our intervention in Israel, etc.
