The Minnesota Senate voted Tuesday to give battered women an escape clause from rental leases if they need to move quickly.
The bill, which passed on a preliminary vote, would let victims of domestic abuse cancel a lease by submitting court documents showing they are under protection from an abuser. They would also have to inform their landlord in writing that they fear more abuse if they stay put.
Landlords would be entitled to the current month's rent plus another month of rent.
