Budget work goes slowly, quickly

The House took up spending bills on the environment, public safety and veterans in a marathon session. Meanwhile, the Senate is sprinting through its work.

The Minnesota Senate is sprinting at a near record speed through its agenda. Far behind in the race to the May 21 adjournment, the House eased into its major budget bills Tuesday at the more measured pace of a marathon.

Eventually, the two DFL-controlled chambers will have to match up their plans for taxes and spending over the next two years, then present them to Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who is already threatening vetoes. Here's a progress report:
