Bush’s War on Gays and Lesbians

06/05/2006

Paul Munnis

As we mentioned in yesterdays editorial, America is now forging a new social contract between citizens, employers, government, and even with our Churches.

Choices are now being made about our future and laws to regulate that future are being proposed and passed.

So today when G.W. Bush launched his divisive drive to discriminate against gays and lesbians, we took notice. The first thing that we noticed is that there is more involved here than simple GOP divisiveness. Indeed this is an attempt by the GOP to initiate into Constitutional law a right wing church initiated agenda that creates permanent third class citizenship for gays and lesbians while denying them their civil rights.

The Christianity that I have been taught is one of God’s inclusiveness. It preaches a gospel of good news that God loves all of his children. He may not like the sin but he loves the sinner. So it seems to me that Christianity should be embracing gays and lesbians and trying to bring God’s word and comfort to them. Driving people out of society, shunning them, and otherwise discriminating against their civil rights seems un-Christian to me.

At a time when we are involved in active genetic research on the human genome we are at the cusp of learning more about gay and lesbian tendencies and how they occur in society on a frequent basis and are not tied to any one country or any one blood line. Indeed many American families have a gay or lesbian family member in the mix and do not reject them but instead invite them into the warmth and support of the family circle.

As we understand more concerning this matter we may become more enlightened and be able to act more responsibly toward these folks. Like a good physician though we must first pledge: “Do no Harm.”

I thus urge fellow citizens to reject this attempt by the right wing to permit constitutional discrimination against our fellow Americans.
