Dick Gephardt: “Lend Hillary A Hand”

05/16/2006

Dear Editor,

I know from experience—anyone in Washington who’s determined to help working Americans is going to need friends.

Hillary Rodham Clinton has that determination. I’ve known and worked with Hillary for many years—when she was in the White House and when she was elected to the Senate. She’s always been a courageous leader, and I’m proud to be her friend.

She’s not afraid to speak out on the issues that affect every American, from heath care, creating jobs, to protecting our environment. But she’s also mastered the gritty details of legislation, details that can make it possible for more veterans to get health care or a factory to hire more workers.

Hillary is our kind of senator. She’s been a visionary leader for the Democratic Party. And believe me, we need to keep members like her in the U.S. Senate.

But to really keep her there—fighting for our jobs and ideals of fairness—we need to make sure that she is re-elected.

During my nearly 30 years in Congress and 14 years as Democratic House Leader, I’ve often seen Republicans stacking the cards against progressive leaders running for re-election.

Well, it’s no secret that this year the Republicans and their right-wing stand-ins, are planning to wage a campaign of negative attacks against Hillary in New York.

Let’s face it, they’re afraid of Hillary—of how much she might help working, middle class Americans. They’re afraid of losing some of those yacht-club tax cuts. Afraid some of that money might go instead to build a new school or protect a retired worker’s pension.

So let’s give Hillary—a good friend to us all—a hand. She needs your support.
