Dollar falls, gold rises in Europe

LONDON (AP) - The U.S. dollar was lower against other major currencies in European trading Monday. Gold rose.
The euro traded at $1.5643, up from $1.5635 late Friday in New York. Later, in midday New York trading, the euro fetched $1.5640.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Friday, included 104.31 Japanese yen, down from 105.26; 1.0340 Swiss francs, down from 1.0347; and 1.0167 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0178.
The British pound was quoted at $1.9917, up from $1.9826.
In midday trading in New York, the dollar bought 104.38 yen and 1.0343 francs, while the pound fetched $1.9901.
Gold traded in London at $894.90 per troy ounce, up from $890.10 late Friday. In Zurich, gold traded at $892.65 bid per troy ounce, up from $889.65.
Silver traded in London at $17.09, up from $16.82.
