Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland Endorses Al!

SAINT PAUL [1/31/08] - Today, the Al Franken for U.S. Senate campaign is proud to announce the support of former Minnesota Congressman and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Robert Bergland.

Former Congressman Robert "Bob" Bergland served four terms representing Minnesota's 7th Congressional District before his resignation to become U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. He has been a champion of rural Americans for decades and a leader in rural development both in his agricultural career and in his support of rural cooperatives.

He released the following statement:

"I'm excited to announce my endorsement of a truly exciting candidate for the United States Senate: Al Franken.

"With health care and transportation costs skyrocketing, a highly volatile farm economy creating excitement and fear at once with people wondering if this is just another boom to be followed by a bust and a declining rural population tied to a stagnant rural job market it is time for new and exciting leadership in Washington.

"Al Franken will be a true champion for rural Minnesotans and he will do it with wit and energy--exactly the kind of person we should send to Washington."

Al said:

"I'm tremendously honored to have Bob's support. There's no wiser or more knowledgeable public servant about the needs of the seventh congressional district and Minnesota's family farms. I will lean on him throughout this campaign and for many years to come."
