Free Press LTE: Amy is Republican-Lite

06/17/2006

This morning’s Mankato Free Press has a Letter to the Editor about Amy
Klobuchar. It’s not online so here it is:

Quote:
After reading the June 10 Free Press article regarding the DFL convention
and endorsement of Amy Klobuchar for U.S. Senate, I couldn’t help but think
that this was more of a Republican-Lite convention.

Klobuchar remarked that it would be ‘irresponsible’ to immediately end
funding of the Iraq War. She also said, ‘It’s not in the best interest of
our troops or the Iraqi people.’ Klobuchar offers no support or explanation
of her reasoning.

Considering that 72 percent of our troops in Iraq advocated a pullout within
a year, I don’t think that most of them would mind coming home to their
loved ones a little sooner. And the Iraqis? Eighty-two percent of them
strongly oppose our presence there. I suspect that the Iraqis would be
dancing in the streets and handing the soldiers bouquets of flowers as they
exited.

A delegate at the DFL convention insinuated that the peace activists were
the ‘lunatic left’ and were trying to take the party down. I always thought
‘Thou shalt not kill’ was a pretty mainstream idea.

I didn’t endure rain, wind, snow, and below zero temperatures, desperately
trying to protest this war, only to be served up a candidate like Klobuchar.

Come September, Ford Bell will get my vote.

End quote

Make of it what you will but this campaign season is going to be an uphill
battle, not only with the public, but with those within the DFL who agree
with this letter. It isn’t a matter of coming up with answers to such
criticism or threatening people with Mark Kennedy. It is a matter of whether
the candidate genuinely represents the general will of the people and will
serve the people first, or, intends to become part of the entrenched DC
establishment and “stays the course” of the status quo. Winning means
nothing if the latter is true. Without true honesty and sincerity from
candidates, there will be no trust from the people and the Preamble of the
Constitution will be as meaningless as ever.
