GOP Searches for Walz Opponent

01/16/2007

(Rochester, MN) - The GOP is searching for a replacement candidate for Gil Gutknecht to run against Tim Walz.

According to “Checks and Balances,” the name of Dick Day keeps being mentioned.

Dick Day is a former MN Senate GOP leader.

Other names mentioned include: Randy Demmer (R-29A, Hayfield), Sen. Julie Rosen (R-24, Fairmont), former Reps. Dan Dorman (R-Albert Lea) and Greg Davids (R-Prescott) and John Wade, President of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and former Chief of Staff to former Congressman Gil Gutknecht (R).

Democrats are in need of two names to get going on fund-raising, one for the Senate to run against Norm Coleman and another for Governor.

The presidential race occurs in 2008 and candidates need high amounts of money to compete. New candidates need to get going right away to raise campaign money. The luxury of waiting around for endorsing conventions is problematic and many think it now an anti-climax to a successful fund-raising period.
