Hot-button issues with potato salad

PINE CITY, MINN. - The festivities got underway just after noon Sunday at VFW Post 4258 for what was billed as possibly the state's smallest gay pride celebration. Closer to town and over the Snake River, across from Sausers Hardware, the pro-family picnic was getting started about the same time.
For those keeping score, there were about an equal number of people, an equal number of American flags, a black dog apiece in the crowd and enough sloppy joes, brats and potato chips for everyone.
Tensions weren't exactly running high Sunday in Pine City, Minn. The only trouble for either group was what to do about the intermittent rain that periodically forced participants at both events to flee inside.
