If you’ve ever had your identity stolen, you know the havoc it can cause — from mysterious bills appearing to money disappearing from accounts, not to mention the hassles of canceling credit cards, closing multiple accounts and opening new ones.
One preventable aspect of the trauma is damage to your credit rating. The Senate Commerce Committee is considering a group of bills related to such cases of identity theft at 12:30 p.m. today. Proposals include giving a consumer the ability to put a “security alert” on a consumer credit report adversely affected by identity theft and blocking such a report from being dispersed.
A number of proposed laws relating to the issue of identity theft have been combined into an omnibus bill that also will get a hearing at the meeting.
Also at the Capitol today:
A statue commemorating Hmong military veterans’ contributions to U.S. efforts in the Vietnam War would receive funding under a bill before the House State Government Finance Committee at its 8:15 a.m. meeting.
The Senate convenes at 9 a.m., the House at noon.
Sex offenders would be required to wear global positioning system bracelets under a bill the House Public Safety Policy and Finance Committee will take up at 10:15 a.m.
Bonding requests for K-12 education are the topic of the House Education Finance Committee’s 12:30 p.m. meeting.
Keeping the heat on is the focus of a bill for emergency heating assistance that the Senate Jobs, Energy and Community Development Committee will discuss at 3 p.m.
