BAGHDAD, 23 April 2007 — Insurgents killed 50 people in a new day of carnage in Iraq yesterday, including 23 members of a non-Muslim minority dragged from a bus and gunned down by the roadside, security officials said.
The violence came as the US military said it would press on with plans to wall in Baghdad’s most restive neighborhoods despite criticism from residents and many Iraqi politicians.
An American commander also announced plans to recruit more than 40,000 more troops into Iraq’s armed forces in 2007 as part of a $14-billion plan to develop their capabilities.
The non-Muslims from Iraq’s Yazidi minority were ambushed near the main northern city of Mosul, police Brig. Gen. Mohammed El-Waqa’a said. “Workers were traveling back from a textile plant in Mosul to their home in Bashika, east of the city,” he said. “Several gunmen stopped the buses, chose the Yazidi among the passengers and killed them in front of everybody.”
