League of Rural Voters Statement on Farm Bill House Passage
07/30/2007
MINNEAPOLIS—The League of Rural Voters today issued the statement below in response to the passage of the 2007 Farm Bill.
The House Farm Bill, which totals $286-billion for five years would impose new limits on farm subsides, increase support for fruit and vegetable growers, and impose modest increases in nutrition funding.
“The farm bill just passed by the House of Representatives represents the best efforts of the Agriculture Committee members in a time of severe budget constraints. While it maintains the critical
safety net for our farmers and expands child nutrition programs, it does not keep pace with the growing demand for conservation incentives and calls for more significant limits on per capita
payments.
We look forward to the Senate debate and the opportunity for improving the bill in the conference committee that follows.”
