Legislator: Let schools set start date

01/31/2007

As a school teacher I sure agree with letting each district decide when it is best to start school.

The one argument that the opposition makes that I don't understand is the part about let "kids be kids" and summer employment.

Currently any high school student that is involved in a fall sport starts practices in the middle of August. Therefore those families are not taking vacation, the kids are changing their work schedules in order to attend half day practices etc. With all those items on the schedule, I don't feel many of our students are allowed to just be kids anymore.

So why should a start before Labor Day really make a difference?
