Let’s Beat Some Anti-Environmentalists

06/17/2006

Dear Editor,

We can make a world of difference by defeating just a few of the worst anti-environment politicians in Congress. Beholden to President Bush and special interest polluters, they are leading the charge against efforts to tackle serious environmental challenges.

The League of Conservation Voters carefully tracks the voting records of Congress on key environmental issues – and we are planning to vote out of office those who:

- Blocked efforts tackle the growing problem of global warming;

- Pushed to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the oil companies;

- Supported more offshore oil drilling off our coastlines;

- Voted to gut the Endangered Species Act; and

- Led efforts to roll back clean air laws.

Our aggressive, multilayered and independent campaigns against politicians with some of the worst environmental records depends on your support. Together, we can change the face of Congress – and protect our environment – this November.

We need your help to raise $20,000 by midnight on June 23rd to kick start our campaign.

Congress is closely divided on the environment. Consider this: A change of just two seats in the Senate could mean that the campaign by Big Oil and the Bush Administration to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge could be stopped in its tracks.

LCV is going on the offensive. Your donation today will lay the groundwork for our campaign to beat some of the most egregious anti-environmentalists. Here’s what we’re planning between now and Election Day on November 7:

- Unleashing canvassers to knock on doors in battleground states and congressional districts

- Running ads on TV, radio, print, and on the Internet in key media outlets

- Mobilizing volunteers to attend candidate forums and town hall meetings

- Turning out voters on Election Day to beat the anti-environmentalists

- Continuing our successful Dirty Dozen program, which targets vulnerable anti-environment incumbents for defeat

- Educating the public about the voting records of their elected officials in our National Environmental Scorecard

- Help LCV raise $20,000 by June 23rd to secure a pro-environment Congress in 2006!

It’s the only way to stop giant oil companies from manipulating the facts on global warming while they pocket record profits ... the only way to take real steps to break America’s destructive addiction to fossil fuels ... and the only way to protect our last remaining natural treasures like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from drilling and other development once and for all.

We are 143 days away from one of the best chances we’ve ever had to win a pro-environment majority.  We will not breathe easy or feel the future of the next generation is secure until some of the worst environmental offenders are voted out of office.

Thank you so much for your support,

Gene Karpinski
