Letter to the Editor

11/11/2005

Dear Editor,

The Bush administration refuses to rule out a presidential pardon for Scooter Libby.  Mr. Libby was recently indicted for lying to a grand jury about his involvement in disclosing the identity of an undercover CIA operative.

While it is too early to judge whether Mr. Libby is guilty of the crimes with which he has been charged, it is not too early for President Bush to assure Americans that should Mr. Libby be found guilty, he can not rely on his close relationship with the President to obtain special treatment.

Officials in the White House and President Bush, in particular, must do nothing to interfere with the investigation into the outing of a CIA agent.  An outing evidently meant to discredit evidence that top officials the Bush administration were aware of prior to the invasion of Iraq and that the claims regarding weapons of mass destruction were false.  We deserve the truth.  Write President Bush and ask him to pledge that he will not pardon anyone indicted and convicted in this affair.
