Mankato to hold send-off for Walz on Thursday

(Mankato, Minn.) - Mankato West High School and the City of Mankato will hold separate send-off events for Congressman-elect Tim Walz on Thursday. Walz, a global geography teacher who is currently on leave from Mankato West while he serves in Congress has taught at West since 1996.

The students and faculty of Mankato West will send Congressman-elect Walz off to Washington D.C. with performances from the West Jazz Band and West Choir. Additionally, the students will show a video they’ve entitled “Mr. Walz goes to Washington.” Members of the faculty and school board will present Congressman-elect Walz with photos and objects to display in his Washington DC and Mankato offices.


This event is open to members of the media and the students and faculty of Mankato West.

Mankato-area community members will send Congressman-elect Walz off to Washington DC with a public reception Thursday evening. A brief program will be held at 5:30 p.m. by Mankato Mayor John Brady, North Mankato Mayor Gary Zellmer, Minnesota State University, Mankato President Richard Davenport and Mankato Area Public Schools' Superintendent Ed Waltman.


Mankato's first Congressman was elected 100 years ago and was the only other local resident to hold a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.


This reception is open to the press and public.
