Firearms are the second leading cause of injury death in the United States.

Though gun control issues are emotional and often controversial, most people would agree that we should continue to look for ways to prevent firearm related injuries.

Dr. David Hemenway PhD from the Harvard School of Public Health will present his latest research on injury prevention in a lecture titled Private Guns and Public Health.Dr. Hemenway is an expert on the relationship between firearm prevalence and violent death--suicide, homicide and unintentional firearm death. He has proposed a public health approach to the problem of firearm related injury, an approach that emphasizes prevention over blame.

Dr. Hemenway is an economist and Professor of Health Policy at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). He is the Director of both the Harvard Injury Control Research Center and the Harvard Youth Violence Prevention Center. He has been a Pew Fellow and has received a Senior Soros Justice Fellowship and an Investigator Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He is the top recipient of the HSPH teaching excellence award. He has written four books and more than 100 journal articles. His most recent research deals with firearm injuries.
