McCain will run for president

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Setting aside any doubt about his presidential aspirations, Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, announced Wednesday he would seek the GOP presidential nomination.

McCain, who has had a presidential exploratory committee, made the declaration on the "Late Show with David Letterman."

"I am announcing that I will be candidate for president of the United States," McCain told Letterman.

"We are going to formally announce it in early April," John Weaver, a top advisor to McCain, told CNN. Weaver said the time and location will be announced at a later date.
