Legislation allowing state dollars to support research on stem cells from human embryos has cleared the Minnesota House.
The vote was 71-62 in the chamber controlled by Democrats.
A similar bill passed the Democrat-led Senate last year.
Differences between the two versions would have to be reconciled before the proposal could go to Governor Tim Pawlenty.
The Republican governor has called for stricter limits on research involving human embryos.
An amendment that would have restricted state aid to studies on stem cells derived without destroying embryos failed on a 65-69 vote.
