The latest: The House and Senate passed an $8.3 billion, 10-year transportation funding bill that would accelerate road and transit construction by:

• Raising the gas tax by 5 cents per gallon immediately and another 2.5 cents over the next few years.

• Allowing metro-area counties to impose a half-cent sales tax increase and wheelage taxes up to $10 per vehicle.

• Lifting caps on vehicle registration fees.
