MN State DFL Convention Is Major Political Event
06/04/2006
Paul Munnis
This week we Democrats will concentrate on taking back the State of Minnesota from GOP government control.
We will endorse candidates for various government offices ranging from the Governorship to the MN Legislature.
We will also attempt to choose those who represent us in the upcoming races for open seats in the US Congress.
What we do or don’t do in coming weeks will determine a lot of what happens over the next four years. We have all seen that complacency has its own consequences.
In process at this event will be the set of principles that guide the Democratic Party in Minnesota and these are what separates us from the GOP. We speak of the Democratic Platform and those planks that you introduced back at our Precinct Caucus meetings and which have been rolled up and integrated to form the principles of governance that we feel strongly abut as Democrats.
The number of Moderate Republicans who have joined the DFL and those Greens who have also joined us will have a strong influence on our Party and it will be visible at this Convention.
Back in Washington we all know that we have a toxic swamp full of efforts to raid the Federal Treasury, betray the public trust, misrepresent the American people to others abroad, and to continue with war profiteering. This is the first step in getting good people to replace the current crop of failed government representatives.
We have good people running and their candidacy will soon go from plural to singular either as a result of this convention or their agreement to let those polling best and the best supported candidate be the names that surface on the ballot. If needed then we will hold primary elections to determine the final name on the ballot representing our Party.
One way or the other we will make our selections known.
Pay attention to this upcoming event. Some of it is rote and boring, some takes place in back-rooms and through delegate appeals followed by floor votes and finally, the picture develops and our slate emerges. There are no winners and losers however. Just making it to this point in the process means that the candidates are strong, are able to poll well, and have strong support within our State. Even those who come off the ballot will survive as key party leaders in the near future. The DFL has a strong group of experienced politicians to help make the wishes of the Party to be enabled in coming months. It will take all of them to effect change in Minnesota.
If you have free time, would like to expand your horizons in politics and to better understand our process and how it works then why not volunteer to work the convention? Lynn Wilson has sent out news to the effect that she has open slots for worker support positions and as we all know many hands make the job go lighter.
