A new social group that hopes to increase the vote for local progressive candidates and causes is planning its first Minnesota meeting on Thursday.

Young Progressive Majority Minnesota is fashioned after a similar group that began in California after the 2004 elections.

One of its local organizers, Rep. John Lesch, DFL-St. Paul, said he hopes it will use youthful enthusiasm and passion to promote progressive candidates and ideas to people in their 20s and 30s.

The group's first Minnesota event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Grandma's Saloon and Grill, 1810 Washington Av. S., with free food and drinks. Organizers are asking for a $5 donation, and more information can be obtained at http://www.goypm.org.

The event is scheduled to include U.S. Sen.-elect Amy Klobuchar, newly elected State Auditor Rebecca Otto and newly elected Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.
