North Korea’s nuclear test and regime change
10/29/2006
Here’s an article on the draconian economic sanctions that led up to
North Korea’s nuclear test. It’s a good follow-on to what I posted in
response to one of Steven Andreasen’s recent postings. In that response,
I pointed out how the Bush Administration’s destruction of the 1994
Agreed Framework led directly to the North Korean withdrawal from the
NPT and resumption of its plutonium program after almost a decade of its
being sealed. The following article describes how the Bush
Administration publicly signed an agreement in September, 2005, that
could have led to a shutdown or at least a suspension of North Korea’s
bomb program, then quietly imposed a stiff sanctions regime intended to
bring about “regime change”, backing North Korea into a corner from
which they felt compelled to continue their program.
