Now is the time! Join our campaign for change.

Dear DFLer,
It's that time of the quarter again. Political analysts are getting ready to page through stacks of financial reports to see which candidates have won the money race. Candidates are working the phones all day and all night so that they can announce proudly that they've exceeded the (artificially low) goals they were pretending to have.
For the record: the quarter ends on June 30 (that's this Saturday), and, yes, our campaign has a goal it's trying to reach.

(THE REAL ONE, NOT THE ARTIFICIALLY LOW ONE)!
But, come on. Money alone doesn't make the world a better place. Money alone certainly doesn't create change in Washington. And, at least in Minnesota, money alone doesn't win campaigns.
People do.
And so, while as a candidate for federal office I am holding the obligatory end-of-quarter fundraising drive, I'm not just interested in dollars. I'm interested in donors.
In the first fundraising quarter, we raised over $1.35 million - a huge amount of money. (And if you helped us amass that huge amount, THANK YOU!)
But my favorite number from the first quarter was 10,835 - that's how many people made a contribution. These people came from every state in the nation and from every county in Minnesota. Many had never given to a campaign before. And most - over 90% - gave $100 or less.
We're on track for another big number this time around - which means we'll be able to afford the phones, the field staff, the odds and ends you need to buy in bulk in order to run a grassroots campaign. But what makes us different isn't how MUCH money we raise, but HOW we raise it. Last quarter, Norm Coleman got a third of his money in huge chunks from corporate PACs.
My goal for the end of this quarter is to get as many people as possible to make just a small contribution to our campaign.

If you've been following the race, you know that I'll be a very different kind of Senator than Norm Coleman. He supports the neo-cons' war in Iraq; I would oppose it. He opposes fully funding embryonic stem cell research; I'd support it. He's voted with George W. Bush roughly 9 out of 10 times since he snuck into the Senate in 2002; I think you know how I feel about the president's legislative agenda.
And I think Minnesotans want a Senator who stands up for our values, not one who stands with George W. Bush. If you're with me on this, but haven't considered making a contribution, would you think about doing so now? Your contribution - whether it's $50, $20, or even $10 - will show the Coleman machine that we mean business.
And it'll show the special interests who too often dictate what happens in Washington that this is one campaign that can't be bought - because tens of thousands of great progressives just like you already own it.

If you're one of the thousands who have made a contribution to show that you're ready for real progressive leadership in Washington, thank you - can I ask you to forward this email and recruit five friends to join us?
And if you haven't added your name to our rolls, now's the perfect time. We'll be keeping a running count of new donors on our website from now until the end of the quarter. Let's show the analysts and the skeptics - and especially the special interests we're fighting against - just how strong we are together.
We're going to win this race with people power. And your contribution, no matter how big or small, makes us that much more powerful.
Thanks,
Al Franken
