Nuclear Weapons Op-Ed, Wall Street Journal
01/05/2007
Olmsted County DFL'ers:
First, "Happy New Year" to all of you, and thanks again to everyone who worked so hard during the 2006 campaign season.
Second, the commentary below (entitled "A World Free of Nuclear Weapons") appeared in Thursday's Wall Street Journal. In addition to former Secretaries of State George Shultz and Henry Kissinger, former Defense Secretary Bill Perry, and former Senator Sam Nunn, there are 17 additional signatories listed at the end of the piece, of which I am one. Click HERE to read the article.
In brief, it will take bold U.S. leadership and international cooperation to pull the world back from the precipice of what is a new and dangerous nuclear era. This commentary piece is an important, bipartisan effort conducted over many months to outline a strategy for doing just that. We propose to energize progress in this vital area by laying out a bold vision for a world free of the nuclear threat with practical steps for making progress towards that vision. The two go hand in hand: without the bold vision, the actions will not be perceived as fair or urgent; and without the actions, the vision will not be perceived as realistic or possible.
As always, I'd welcome any comments you may have.
Best Regards,
Steve Andreasen
