Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois will be in the Twin Cities on June 29 for a public rally and a fundraiser at the Minneapolis home of DFL activists Sam and Sylvia Kaplan. It will be Obama's first trip to Minnesota as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president.
The Kaplans are on Obama's national finance committee. The fundraiser will cost $1,000 a head. The precise time and place of the public rally have not been determined.
The announcement of the Obama event follows last week's announcement of a Minneapolis fundraiser on Friday featuring Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York who, like Obama, is rated a top-tier candidate for the Democratic nomination.
Minnesota's March 4 caucuses occur too late in the presidential nominating process to figure heavily in any candidate's strategy for winning the nomination, but the state has plenty of political donors of both parties.
