OLMSTED DFL IN REVIEW - 2006

01/02/2007

Dear DFL,

For nearly three decades many have worked hard to institute political change and growth of the Democratic Party in Olmsted County. Today’s accomplishments must be appreciated by reflecting both on how we achieved change and a vision for the future.

The following years were themed in scope for party development.

2000 - 2001 DFL Identity

2002 - 2003 DFL Credibility

2004 - 2005 DFL Electability

2006 - 2007 DFL Sustainability and Growth

Many necessary events over these years were paramount to enhance political change, such as:

  • Public events sponsored by the Olmsted County DFL to engage the community and hear their concerns.

  • Opening a local DFL office in 2002 and sustaining yearlong presence.

  • Dedicated and experienced candidates committed to public service.

  • Reaching beyond Olmsted County to the state and federal levels that recognize and include our area as a vital part of MN politics.

  • Hosting State DFL conventions in 2000 and 2006 both proving to be of significant success for the State DFL primarily due to local volunteer efforts.

  • National figures visiting Rochester, designated as ground zero in both 2004 and 2006 elections.

  • Our Annual Fundraising Dinner and fundraising letters providing the fiscal means for the Olmsted County DFL to offer the necessary support to all our candidates both state and federal.

  • Organization and education of campaign workers and volunteers to support the necessary demands and needs of successful grassroots campaigns.

  • Budget planning, committee work and election analysis to optimize future growth and opportunity.

Last November the people spoke. This week, we begin the 2007 legislative session as the majority party both at the state and federal level.

It is with great pride we acknowledge our new and returning elected officials.

  • U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar

  • U.S. Representative Tim Walz

  • State Senator Ann Lynch

  • State Representative Tina Liebling

  • State Representative Andy Welti

  • State Representative Kim Norton

  • State Attorney General Lori Swanson

  • Secretary of State Mark Ritchie

  • State Auditor Rebecca Otto

At the same time we offer our sincere gratitude to State Senator Sheila Kiscaden as she ends this chapter of her career in public service.

In 2006, we made historic gains combining exceptional incumbents and candidates with an Olmsted County DFL well prepared to offer support both fiscally and with the volunteer base absolutely necessary to win grassroots politics.

To all involved, a tremendous thank you, your dedication and optimism was exemplary and is well noted throughout the State.

Today, as the major political party, we take serious our past and look to the future with great hope and optimism. Our new role will demand just as much hard work, if not more, to support our incumbents and prepare the resources necessary for success in 2008.

Again, a huge thank you to all who helped make 2006 a historic political success for the people of Olmsted County.

    Happy New Year!

    Sincerely,

    - Lynn
