Panel rejects outdoor funding measure

A bill that would dedicate a portion of the state's sales tax to the environment and culture suffered a serious but not fatal defeat in a key Senate committee today.
The bill would let voters decide whether to dedicate 3/8ths of one percent of the state's sales tax to natural and cultural resources, generating about $291 million a year to preserving fish and wildlife, restoring lakes and streams, and providing funding for arts education and access to the arts.
By a 5-7 vote, the Senate Tax Committee today voted down the bill, with concerns raised about the wisdom of restricting funds to those areas.
