Press Conference / Rally to Support Workers 12/22
12/21/2006
Please Note Tomorrow --
Where: Local 21 Building 105 N. Broadway, Rochester
When : 9am - Friday December 22, 2006
Who : EVERYONE who cares about working people.
Why : NINETEEN workers may lose their jobs for the Holidays - for
no good reason.
One week ago, in the dead of night, a deal was cut to sell the
Holiday Inn Express at 202 S. Broadway. The buyers are Mike and
Chandrakant Bhakta of Houston, Texas. They left it uncertain whether
they were going to keep the workers - which means prepare for the
worst. So these 19 workers have 5 days to face the prospect of losing
their jobs, hoping and praying that they will not be out in the cold,
December 21st.
The Bhaktas' various companies have had lawsuits for non-payment to
vendors and healthcode violations in Texas. Now they are bringing the
race-to-the-bottom way of doing business to downtown Rochester.
Workers who have worked for the same property for 30 years are being
shown the door.
This is an act of cruelty: first for giving short notice. A decent
man would give time for people to get their lives in order. Second,
for pushing people out of a job the weekend before Christmas. The
work still needs to be done, and these workers are willing and eager
to do it! It's just wrong.
So come out and support these workers, and help draw attention to
this heinous injustice!
