Rove’s nightmare.

11/05/2007

The '08 election's only a year away. Our field team's put together a plan for our biggest election get-out-the-vote program ever—but if we want to build it, we need to raise $200,000 to get it rolling now. Can you contribute $15 a month, now through the election?

Dear Friend,

A couple of months ago, I sat down with Adam Ruben, our political director, to talk about our plans for 2008.

The stakes are high: Four more years of Bush policies would just about sink our country. So I asked Adam to come up with the biggest, most audacious program he could imagine—a get-out-the-vote machine to ensure that, on Election Day a year from today, no progressive voters are left behind.

He called me a few days ago with an amazing program that draws on the everything we did in 2004 and 2006. Six hundred organizers, amazing new technology, and hundreds of thousands of volunteers. It's a beautiful plan, and we're confident it could make the difference between victory and defeat.

Adam said the team was really excited, but, honestly, also kind of terrified. He pointed out—not very subtly—that as of today, we'll be only one year out. To build this thing, we're going to need to start right away, and we're going need to raise real money—$5 million.

So, I'm writing you. If we can raise $200,000 in the next few days, we can get Adam and the team rolling. And the sooner they're rolling, the better the program will be and the more votes it'll turn out. Can you give us a hand by chipping in $15 a month, now through the election? It's quick, secure, and easy—we bill your credit card each month, and you can cancel any time. Click here:

If we start now, we can combine two tried-and-tested programs: First, the neighbor-to-neighbor program we ran in 2004 (which we called Leave No Voter Behind). For MoveOn members in swing states, this kind of face-to-face contact is the very best way to get more voters to the polls. Together, we knocked on more than 4.2 million doors that year.

Second, we'll add the person-to-person calling program we ran in 2006 (named Call for Change). MoveOn members around the country can make a big impact on this election by calling swing-state voters we can't reach at their doors. We made 7 million voter calls this way—and paved the way for a big Democratic win in 2006.

Combined, these programs will help make sure every last progressive voter possible gets to the polls. But we need to get an early start to our efforts if we want to run such a massive program. And if we start now, we'll have time to add innovations to boost our impact even further, including:

New high-tech tools to connect volunteers directly to people who might not vote without a reminder

Fun and effective voter-contact house parties, modeled on our 2006 calling parties

Sophisticated "microtargeting" to find every progressive voter, even those in Republican neighborhoods

A voter persuasion program, to tip swing voters our way

A new effort to target people who vote by mail and need to hear from us well before Election Day

Here's the thing: If we're going to make ambitious plans to win, we need to know we'll have the funds to make them happen. If you can kick in $15 per month (you can cancel easily whenever you choose) it'll create a strong foundation for victory in 2008. Please donate now:

A year before the 2004 and 2006 elections we hadn't even begun planning our election efforts. We've got a great head start this year, and if we have the resources to start putting the pieces into place, that will give us the boost we need for a major victory next year.

We need to make sure Adam and the team can start building this thing now.

Thanks for all you do.
