Saving Social Security

02/24/2005

We’re all very busy, but perhaps you can consider doing one thing for
the country.

In today’s Mankato Free Press (also in the latest issue of NEWSWEEK
and other magazines and newspapers) there was a full page ad
sponsored by AARP on page A4 (1st section). It reads, “If you have a
problem with the sink, you don’t tear down the whole house.” It’s an
ad supporting a sensible plan for shoring up Social Security AND
opposing President Bush’s attempt to privatize it.

Let’s be clear: THE PRESIDENT’S PLAN WILL NOT SAVE SOCIAL SECURITY
NOR WILL IT PROTECT OUR SENIORS AND OTHERS WHO RELY ON THE CURRENT SYSTEM. I have done extensive research on options for ensuring a
strong Social Security, and the President’s plan is not a viable
solution. In fact, it will only make matters worse.

May I suggest that you cut out the ad, put your name and address on
it, perhaps scribble a note on it, and send it to:

Rep. Gil Gutknecht
425 Cannon House Office Bldg.
Washington, DC 20515

For the record, I was once a member of AARP but terminated my
membership when the organization supported the President’s disastrous
prescription drug plan for Medicare. This may help me to reconsider
my membership. Meanwhile, I have joined the Alliance for Retired
Americans , which has been consistent in
its support of policies that will benefit older Americans.

I have a strong feeling that the country may finally be waking up to
the damage this president has done and intends to do upon the vast
majority of its citizens. We must all keep the ball rolling.

Thanks,

Leigh Pomeroy
