Senate passes plan to recycle ‘e-waste’

Efforts to step up safe disposal of computer screens and other electronics containing toxic heavy metals won preliminary approval in the state Senate on Friday.
Proponents say the measure sponsored by Sen. Linda Higgins, DFL-Minneapolis, will reduce illegal dumping of so-called "e-waste" in ditches, wetlands and other public areas. The dumping increased after the state outlawed using ordinary landfills to dispose of the items, which contain toxic heavy metals.
