Send a message to Senator Coleman to end this war

Dear Editor,
Democrats in the U.S. Congress are beginning the end of American involvement in the Iraqi civil war. Congress is now poised to send legislation to President Bush that sets benchmarks and a timetable for bringing our troops home. The president has vowed to veto the measure – favoring an indefinite, stay-the-course strategy in this escalating civil war.
Unfortunately, our own senior senator, Republican Norm Coleman, supports the president's failed policy.
Minnesotans spoke clearly last November: it's time for a new direction and an end to our involvement in Iraq. Senator Coleman even seemed to understand that fact in early March:
"Most of my constituents want to set a date, because they're terribly frustrated," he said at the time.
And polling across the country confirms that Americans are frustrated and want an end to the war.
70 percent of Americans think that we should leave Iraq within 12 months.
More than 80 percent of Americans are worried about the United States' standing in world affairs.
73 percent of Americans believe that we aren't doing a good job of promoting peace and prosperity throughout the world.
But there is one important person who disagrees with the vast majority of Minnesotans and Americans: President George W. Bush. And thus far, Senator Coleman has decided that he should support what President Bush wants instead of representing his constituents.
It's time for Senator Coleman to hear loud and clear that we won't stand for it any more.
It's time for Senator Coleman to support a change of course in Iraq.
It's time for Senator Coleman to put our interests ahead of the president's interests.
