GOP candidate in 15B found in violation of residency requirement
The Minnesota Supreme Court agreed with a Ramsey county judge in finding that Susan Ek, the Republican candidate for the special election in House district 15B, did not establish residency in the district for at least six months before the election, as required by law.
Ek, therefore, has been disqualified from the ballot for the December 27th special election. The court did not address the question as to whether the Republican Party may choose a substitute candidate, but the Secretary of State and the Attorney General have both determined that the law does not allow a substitute in cases other than a candidate’s death or catastrophic illness.
Kay Ek, the former candidate’s mother, has announced that she has the backing of the Republican Party to wage a write-in campaign if the party is unsuccessful in petitioning the court to place her on the ballot as a substitute candidate.
