Stop New Offshore Drilling - Promote Clean Energy
06/28/2006
Tell Congress: Vote NO on Offshore Drilling Bill.
Dear Editor,
If you agree that our dependence on oil is a major concern – for our economy, our environment, our pocketbooks – then you stand with the majority of Americans.
Congress can take real steps to solve the problem. But this week, instead of moving our nation forward by investing in renewable energy, the U.S. House of Representatives may move backwards. In a vote as early as Thursday, the House could lift 25 years of coastal protections and allow widespread new oil and gas drilling off America’s coasts.
Contact Rep. Gutknecht today opposing new offshore oil drilling and demand a better energy future for the U.S.
Act now! The vote is likely to happen this Thursday!
Together, we can stop this bill from becoming another example of misguided energy policy by Members of Congress. America has the technological know-how to own our energy future. We can build cars that use less gas. We can develop renewable energy like wind and solar power that will create thousands of good jobs here at home and reinvigorate our economy. Instead, the House is voting on a bill that only promises more oil dependence, potential oil spills, and a threat to our economy and sea life.
Here are just a few reasons to stop this bill:
Drilling off our nation’s coasts will only produce just a few months of oil and will take until the middle of the next decade before we could even start producing a drop of it.
We should be focused on developing new technologies, slowing oil consumption, and reducing the global warming pollution it causes.
A catastrophic spill—one that could spoil the ecology and economic value of a coastline for generations—is a real possibility.
If this bill is any indication of what is to come, lawmakers are unlikely to produce any real solutions to address America’s oil addiction. Let’s stop this harmful bill in its tracks and make sure Congress goes in a different direction.
Write your Representative today to demand faster, cheaper, cleaner and longer-term energy solutions.
We need all the voices we can get to tell Congress that we need leadership – not more oil and gas drilling – to solve our energy problems. Please forward this to your friends and family after you’ve taken action.
