There’s no stopping us

03/27/2008

Dear Editor,

When DFLers are revved up and ready for change, there’s no stopping us.

In the latest sign that 2008 is shaping up as a year of historic change, Democrats all across our state are attending their county and senate-district conventions in record numbers.

Why does it matter? (After all, DFL conventions probably aren’t the most glamorous way that you can spend a Saturday afternoon.) It matters because these delegates — many of them first-timers — are the new backbone of the DFL Party. They’re the folks who will knock on doors, talk to their neighbors, kick in their refundable $50 and turn out the voters that we need in November.

DFLers old and new aren’t resting on the laurels of our history-making caucuses, and they’re not waiting for our presidential nominee to be chosen, either. They're ready to make change now — and they need your help.

Check out these convention-turnout numbers:

Itasca County doubled their delegate turnout over 2004. This year, 294 people braved the cold, compared to 147 four years ago.
On the Iron Range in Senate District 5, 329 DFLers showed up, nearly doubling the 170 who attended the 2004 convention.
Wright County set a recent record with 297 Democrats, well over the 169 who came in 2004.
And in Senate District 42 — the former Republican strongholds of Eden Prairie and Minnetonka — 541 delegates attended their convention, easily over twice the 252 who showed up in 2004.
Throughout Minnesota, DFLers are showing that they’re ready to fight and win. But training costs money, phones cost money, paper and pens and pizza for volunteers cost money.

So they need your help. Contribute your fully refundable $50 to the DFL Party today and know that your money will be well spent — because we know that when Democrats win in Minnesota, we win on the ground, neighbor to neighbor, door to door. And that’s where we’re putting our resources — in people.

Sincerely,

Brian Melendez
Chair
Minnesota DFL Party

P.S. When you support DFLers at the grassroots with a refundable $50 contribution, you really can get it right back. The State of Minnesota's Political Contribution Refund program is one more way that we make sure that people — not special interests — run our democracy. Don’t let it go to waste.

P.P.S. Remember to check off the DFL Party (by entering Code 11) when you file your Minnesota tax return! Support your values without increasing the tax that you owe.
