TIM WALZ COMMENTS ON GUTKNECHT’S IRAQ TRIP
07/18/2006
Mankato, MN (July 18, 2006)—“In the past I’ve alerted the media to the fact that my opponent refuses to discuss the war in Iraq. Both in the Wall Street Journal and in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune he said that the voters of the 1st district didn’t know how they felt about the war and that he’d rather not address the issue.
“Politicians like my opponent are eager to stand in front of soldiers for a photo op, but sadly he doesn’t stand behind them when it comes to asking the hard questions, demanding answers, and passing the legislation they need to stay safe and complete their mission. Time and again he has voted against extending TRICARE, protecting soldiers from financial ruin, and adequately funding the VA healthcare system.
“After 24 years in the National Guard I know that any time you put American troops on the ground they will do good. Whether they’re building a school or escorting people to the voting place, American troops will improve their environment on the micro level. My opponent will undoubtedly talk about these good deeds he witnessed. However, I hope that we will not lose sight of the fact that on the macro level Iraq is in turmoil and that the Administration my opponent so willingly supports has failed to provide my brothers in arms with a plan.
“Time and again my opponent has let down soldiers, their families and the veterans of this great nation and in doing so has jeopardized our national security. When elected, keeping our promises to our soldiers and veterans and thereby ensuring our national security will be my top priority.”
